EAST REGRION UNDER 16 LEAGUE
DIVISION 3 FINAL
Legion 1-14 Rathmore 1-07 Played in perfect conditions in Beaufort last Thursday, this East Region Under 16 Division 3 league final, sponsored by MD O’Shea, saw Legion overcame a nervous start to prove too strong for a gallant Rathmore. Cian Gammell opened the scoring with a fine point for Legion. Rathmore responded quickly through the excellent Brian Friel who palmed the ball to the net after his initial shot was well saved by Legion goalkeeper David Musgrave. Friel then quickly added a point. Legion were to dominate the rest of the half and kicked fine points from Darren Looney, Cian Gammell (3), Jack Hanrahan (2) and Michael Devlin and lead 0-9 to 1-2 at the break. Damien Nagle and Michael Devlin swapped points at the beginning of the second half. With 40 minutes on the clock Legion were awarded a penalty after a good move was brought to an end. However, a great save from goalkeeper Derry Mc Carthy kept Rathmore in the game. Legion then added 3 further points from Gammell (2) and Ian O’ Shea. Rathmore weren’t going down without a fight and added points from Anthony Darmody, Killian O’ Sullivan and Trevor Cremin. In this period of play, Brian Friel hit an unstoppable shot towards the Legion goal, only to see it crash off the crossbar. Barry Slattery then added a lovely point for Legion which saw them run out deserved winners on the evening as referee Donal Donnelly blew the final whistle. Mary Donnelly from East Kerry Coiste na nOg presented the trophy to Legion captain Cian Gammell.
