O’Sullivan Cup Final 2008
Listry 1-9 Kilcummin 0-6

Listry won the East Kerry Junior Championship on Saturday last at Farranfore when they defeated Kilcummin. Listry opened the scoring with a point from David Nolan.

Their second attack saw Nolan and Derry Ahern use the cross bar and upright as target practice as rebound after rebound gave them scoring opportunities which were spurned. Kilcummin had the lion’s share of possession in the first fifteen minutes but managed just two long range points from midfielder Pat O’Donoghue as their wides tally mounted up and their efforts fell short into Tadgh Ahern’s hands in the Listry goal. Points from Anthony Sweeney (free) and Jimmy O’Leary put Listry two ahead after twenty minutes. On the stroke of half time, Listry’s Derry Ahern ghosted past his marker and from an acute angle shot over to bring the half time score to Listry 0-4 Kilcummin 0-2.
On the resumption, Ahern needed the assistance of the post to point a long range shot. Listry now had their best period of play. Midfielder John Foley took the ball down the left wing and cutting in along the end line punched over a well worked individual point. Wing back Aidan O’Donoghue sporting a distinctive piece of bandage as headgear, was the link between Jimmy O’Leary and Derry Ahern who shot over for a five point lead. The diminutive O’Donoghue had a great hour at wing back and was tenacious in the tackle on much bigger opponents. Kilcummin badly needed a goal to vitalise their challenge. Pat O’Donoghue powered forward and from twenty metres blasted for that goal but his shot was deflected over the bar by John Paul Mannix. Bad fortune for Kilcummin was followed by good luck for Listry when a Stephen Brosnan speculative high ball into the goal area caused the Kilcummin goalie to step back over his line as he attempted to gather the ball. Listry’s David Nolan and Kilcummin’s Seanie O’Leary swapped pointed frees before wing forward Damien Clifford stretched Listry’s lead to eight points. Two consolation points from Kilcummin’s Colm Guilfoyle and Seanie O’Leary brought the final score to Listry 1-9 Kilcummin 0-6 in a poor quality game where challenges were clumsy and led eventually to two players being dismissed.

This was Listry’s second occasion to win this trophy – their last being in 1981.Board Vice Chairman Tim Ryan thanked the teams, match officials and the Firies club for their facilities. Mrs Kathleen O’Sullivan presented the Owen O’Sullivan cup to Listry captain Derry Ahern and the same player received his man-of-the match award from Con O’Sullivan.

Semi Finals

Listry 1-12 Spa 1-5
With fifteen minutes remaining in this East Kerry Junior Football Championship semi-final for the O’Sullivan Cup, the sides were level. A fitter more determined Listry outfit capitalised on a hotly disputed penalty and went on to go seven points clear of their opponents in the remaining period. Spa lost their concentration and ran out of steam towards the end in an incident filled game at Spa on Saturday afternoon.
Listry started smartly with three points from Anthony Sweeney, John Foley and Jimmy O’Leary before Brendan Doolin opened the Spa account in the tenth minute. A free by Anthony Sweeney put his side three points clear before a Spa attack saw Shane Doolin fouled in the square. Referee Jimmy O’Shea awarded the first of three penalties in this game. Brendan Doolin despatched the ball expertly to the top left corner of Tadgh Ahern’s net to put the sides on equal terms. Good defensive play by both teams saw attacks repulsed until Spa’s Anthony O’Sullivan’s shot rebound off the upright. Andrew Fitzgerald caught the rebound but was fouled and for the second time in five minutes a penalty was awarded. The shot went low and hard but Listry keeper Tadgh Ahern was equal to it and made a good save on the line. Listry tagged on two further points before half time from Mike Tangney and Anthony Sweeney to bring the half time score to 0-6 for Listry 1-1 Spa.
On the resumption, Pat Cronin Spa and David Nolan Listry swapped points. With five minutes gone, Listry introduced Damien Clifford for Mike Tangney and he made a big impact at corner forward. Spa began to collect yellow cards as frustration at some referee and sideline decisions led to indiscipline. Nevertheless, they drew level after two pointed frees from Pat Cronin and Brendan Doolin – the latter a magnificent score from the sideline which was all of 60 metres from goal. Andy O’Sullivan in the Spa goal smothered a dangerous ball after Damien Clifford saw his shot rebound from the upright. However, Spa didn’t clear effectively and Clifford got to the incoming ball to register a point and the lead for Listry 0-8 to 1-4. Spa’s Anthony O’Sullivan and Listry’s Jimmy O’Leary swapped points just before the turning point of the game occurred. A determined assault on the Spa goal resulted in a tug on Derry Ahern’s jersey inside the square and referee Jimmy O’Shea had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. The Spa defence hotly disputed the decision and when players regained their composure, Ahern slotted the ball past O’Sullivan in the Spa net. The game was slipping away from Spa as they began to fade in the final minutes. Listry powered ahead towards the final whistle and finished strongly with three points from Anthony Sweeney ( two frees) and Stephen Brosnan to win on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-5.
For the winners, the Darmody brothers, Stephen and Paul, directed play well at centre back and centre forward, teak tough John Foley and Stephen Brosnan had the upper hand at midfield while up front Jimmy O’Leary, Derry Ahern and ace marksman Anthony Sweeney caught the eye. They had more firepower with eight of their players registering scores. Spa had great efforts from wing back Shane Devane and Andrew Fitzgerald while up front, Brendan Doolin and Pat Cronin took their scores well. Listry will now meet Kilcummin for the Junior title and the Owen O’Sullivan Cup 2008.

Kilcummin reach Final of Junior Championship

Kilcummin 1-13 Dr Crokes 1-10
Kilcummin booked their place in the final of the East Kerry Junior Championship on Sunday last when they defeated Dr Crokes by 3 points at Lewis Road. Kilcummin started well with corner forward Mike O’Shea registering the first point of the game. Good teamwork was the feature of the Kilcummin game – their backs were first to the ball and Dr Crokes played into their hands by sending low ball in to a forward line which was well marshalled by Muiris Healy, Kevin McSweeney and Damien Doolin. The teams were level after fifteen minutes at three points each. Then Kilcummin posted a goal and three points without reply to see them go six points clear after twenty five minutes– their goal coming from wing forward Anthony O’Sullivan. Ben Brosnan led a very speedy Kilcummin attack and contributed hugely to Kilcummin’s efforts. However, Dr Crokes continued to press forward with David Moloney their general at midfield directing operations. Wing forward Shane O’Neill was pulled down inside the square and Michael Grady slotted the ball past Kieran Fleming. A converted free by O’Grady left just one point between the teams at half time – Kilcummin 1-6 Dr Crokes 1-5.
O’Grady and Moloney put Dr Crokes two points clear five minutes into the second half. Kilcummin then hit a golden patch and with Ritchie O’Connor operating as a third midfielder, they tightened their grip around mid-field. They had five successive points from wing back Sean Brosnan, Ben Brosnan, Ritchie O’Connor (2) and Daniel Kelly. Kilcummin’s half back line was solid in defence with Sean Brosnan in particular gave a man of the match performance as he drove forward to link up with the forward lines to create scoring chances. To their credit, it was Dr Crokes which produced one of the best scores of the game when centre back Ian Howard collected a ball deep in his defence, moved forward along the wing, passed to David Moloney and took the return pass in the wing forward position. Evading a number of tackles he passed to Michael O’Grady who shot an excellent point front out along the sideline. It was to be Dr Crokes last score and with five minutes remaining, centre forward John Devane and midfielder Pat O’Donoghue closed out the scoring for Kilcummin to put their side into the O’Sullivan Cup final on a scoreline of Kilcummin 1-13 Dr Crokes 1-10.
Despite the rainfall of recent days and weeks, the Dr Crokes pitch was in great condition with a good firm surface. Referee Padraig O’Sullivan of Firies dealt tactfully and expeditiously with the occasional bouts of advice tendered by the players and mentors.
Teams: Kilcummin: Kieran Fleming, Muiris Healy, Kevin McSweeney, Damien Doolin, Sean Brosnan, Colm Lenihan, Owen Lane, Pat O’Donoghue (0-1), Daniel Kelly (0-1F), Anthony O’Sullivan (1-0), John Devane (0-2, 0-1F), Colm Guilfoyle, Ben Brosnan (0-2), Ritchie O’Connor(0-2, 0-1F), Mike O’Shea (0-4), Subs: Daniel O’Keeffe, Eric O’Connor, Seanie O’Leary, Owen Horgan, Conor Healy.

Quarter Finals

East Kerry Junior Football Championship
Spa 3-7 Rathmore 1-11

Spa joins Dr Crokes and Kilcummin in the semi-finals of the East Kerry Junior Championship when they had two points to spare over Rathmore on last Wednesday at Spa. Spa will be thankful to a resolute defence which denied the Rathmore men in this closely fought contest where the lead changed hands five times. Rathmore opened the scoring with a point from a 20 metre free by Gerry Murphy only to see Brendan Doolan cancel it with a well taken point from 35metres out along the sideline. A great clearance by Rathmore’s Tim Lynch found Paul Reen and displaying brotherly love, Paul set up Patrick Reen whose burst towards goal was rewarded with a major. A 45 metre free by Brendan Doolan of Spa reduced the lead to a point. Spa introduced Michael Murphy at wing forward allowing his brother Donal take over the corner forward berth. Within a minute, Donal shook the net to put Spa ahead 1-3 to 1-2. The game was end to end fare with the lead swapping hands. Pat Cronin robbed the ball over the head of Rathmore full back Eoin Doherty and registered a point. And then came a well worked goal by Spa. Corner back Paul Casey took the ball out of defence and found Shane Devane with a perfect pass. Shane worked the ball along the left wing and sent a diagonal ball to Pat Cronin who quickly passed to corner forward Donal Murphy. The inrushing Brendan Doolan took the ball at speed from Murphy and shot the ball well to Jamie Cooper’s right corner to put Spa four points clear – 2-4 to 1-3. But Rathmore was not to be denied and in the 5 minutes before half time they recorded 3 points from a Gerry Murphy free, a 45m free by Mark Kelleher and on the whistle Michael D Cahill finished off a great Rathmore attack to leave the bare minimum between the teams – Spa 2-4 Rathmore 1-6.
On the resumption Rathmore drew level with a Gerry Murphy free, and pushed two points ahead with scores from Mark Nagle and Paul Reen. Spa’s Michael Murphy and Pat Cronin levelled the game but Dermie Fitzgerald put Rathmore one ahead after 15 minutes. Good interplay between Spa’s Anthony O’Sullivan and Brendan Doolan set up Pat Cronin who finished to the net and Spa went two points clear. Dermie Fitzgerald and Pat Cronin swapped the last two points of the game before an exciting rush by Rathmore saw as many as 12 players participate in a major onslaught on the Spa defence looking for the goal that would win the game. Rathmore’s John Hickey took possession of the final pass and entered the parallelogram. Spa was confronted with a do or die situation. The defence held its composure and surrounded Hickey effectively and legally while referee Pat Kissane consulted his watch to verify it was time to blow his whistle for the last time. And so Spa held on to record a good win to take them into the Semi-Final of the O’Sullivan Cup for 2008 on a final scoreline of Spa 3-7 Rathmore 1-11.
Teams:
Spa: Andy O’Sullivan, Paul Casey, Brian Devane, Conor Gleeson, Shane Devane, Damien O’Sullivan, Colm Moynihan, Kevin O’Regan, Kieran Herlihy, Francis O’Roirdan, Pat Cronin (1-4), Donal Murphy (1-0), Brendan Doolan (0-2, 0-1f), Anthony O’Sullivan, Paul Cahill. East Kerry Junior Football Championship
Kilcummin 2-9 Firies 2-7

Firies managed to fritter a nine point lead as Kilcummin booked their place in the East Kerry Junior Championship Semi Finals. Firies had a dream start when within four minutes Darren Courthy and N B Foley put two goals past the Kilcummin keeper. Courthy was dominant at full forward and by the tenth minute had Firies ahead 2-2 to no score. Kilcummin’s John Devane and Firies Ian Crowley exchanged points followed by Anthony O’Sullivan, who put two badly needed points on the board for Kilcummin. However, Firies tagged on a further two to leave them with an eight point margin at half time Firies 2-5 Kilcummin 0-3.
However, as we know from other more high profile matches in recent times, an eight point lead can be a perilous one and in the second half Firie managed to squander their lead. As the second half opened, Firies stretched their lead to nine points. Kilcummin’s Ritchie O’Connor who was introduced late in the first half had a major influence on the game. Four minutes into the second half he brought the Kilcummin tally to four points. Shortly thereafter Firies lost the influential Ian Crowley to injury, and they missed his contribution at midfield. Kilcummin was a revitalised side. Diarmuid O’Donoghue got the first of their two goals followed by two points from Ritchie O’Connor to leave just three points between the sides. Mike O’Sullivan had Firies last point of the game at the end of the quarter but Kilcummin was in control and went on to register a further goal and three points from J Devane (1-1), Anthony O’Sullivan and Ritchie O’Connor, a point each to bring the final score to Kilcummin 2-9 Firies 2-7. Dr Crokes await them in the semi final.

Listry 1-8 Currow 0-7
Listry earned a place in the semi-finals of the East Kerry Junior Football Championship when they defeated Currow last Saturday evening. Playing in heavy rain throughout, the two teams served up a competitive and attractive game of football on a good Currow sod despite the very bad weather conditions. Currow was most wasteful of their chances in the first half when they could only manage 1 point having put eight shots wide of the mark. Listry, on the other hand, was more effective and wasted few chances to lead at half time by 0-7 to 0-1. Listry was the fitter team and their forwards in particular were fast and accurate. They forced Currow into fouls and punished those indiscretions. Listry’s Derry Ahern opened the scoring with a point in the first minute. Their midfield pairing of Stephen Brosnan and John Foley was in control of their domain. Centre forward Paul Darmody was distributing good ball to the fast Listry inside forwards, which allowed Listry to set up good combination moves. Corner forwards Mike Tangney and Derry Ahern benefited and Listry put four points on the board early on. Wing forwards Anthony Sweeney and David Nolan won their own free and duly slotted over to put their side six points ahead of Currow at the break.
However, Listry’s comfortable half time lead of six points was strongly challenged after the resumption as Currow mounted a resolute reply on their home turf. This past year has seen the theory of the safe six point margin exploded. Currow had no respect for the Listry lead and the Listry back division was obliged to withstand a major second half effort by Currow who clawed their way back into the game. The Currow forwards ran at the Listry defence and in the poor underfoot conditions, Listry gave away a number of close-in frees. In the first ten minutes of the second half, Currow’s Mike King brought his side back in contention with four well taken frees to reduce the Listry lead to two points. Listry was missing good chances in front of goal as the Currow defence marked their men closely. Derry Ahern increased their lead to three points in an attack which saw Mike Tangney forced to retire. The next Listry attack saw wing back Aidan O’Donoghue carry the ball along the wing to find substitute Tadgh Ahern whose angled shot found the roof of the net and Listry went six points clear. The goal was to be Listry’s last score of the game and in the remaining fifteen minutes, they were obliged to mount a stout defence to keep Currow at bay. There followed a period of end to end play by both teams which failed to produce scores. Listry’s centre back Stephen Darmody, keeper Colm Counihan and corner backs Danny Wrenn and Cathal Donoghue had a torrid time as they cleared their lines under intense pressure. Currow desperately sought the necessary goal but Listry kept their net intact. Kieran Scanlon and Mike King registered Currow’s last two points but it was not enough. With a final score line of 1-8 to 0-7, Listry advance to the semi-finals of the O’Sullivan Cup competition where they will meet Spa.

Listry: Colm Counihan, Danny Wrenn, John Paul Mannix, Cathal O’Donoghue, Aidan O’Donoghue , Stephen Darmody, Kieran Murphy, John Foley, Stephen Brosnan, Anthony Sweeney (0-1 free), Paul Darmody, David Nolan (0-1 free), Derry Ahern(0-5), Jimmy O’Leary, Mike Tangney (0-1). Subs: Tadgh Ahern (1-0) and Paul O’Donoghue
Currow: Kevin Moran, Ray Mahoney, Niall O’Sullivan, Thomas O’Sullivan, Dan Dunleavy, Kieran Scanlon (0-1), Owen Collins, Mike McCarthy, Seamus Flynn, Mike King (0-6, 0-5 frees), Pat O’Sullivan, Michael McCarthy, M J Scanlon, David Fleming, Eugene Cronin.
