Central Car Sales O’Sullivan Cup gets Underway

Fossa, Cordal, Listry and the “B” teams of Dr Crokes and Firies made it through to the quarter finals of the Central Car Sales O’Sullivan Cup following the first round games on Tuesday evening of last week.

Fossa 1-8 Gneeveguilla “B” 0-8

Fossa qualified for the Quarter Finals of the O’Sullivan Cup following a three point victory over the homeside in Gneeveguilla in a game that will not live very long in the memory of the small crowd present. In a game that never came to life, the bulk of the scoring was done at the beginning of each half and though the winners deserved to advance they made very hard work of ensuring victory despite dominating the possession stakes for long periods.

Gneeveguilla got off to a flying start and were three points to the good inside the opening five minutes thanks to points from Philip Cremin, Danny O’Sullivan and Gearoid Carmody. However their good work was undone very quickly when Mikey Cronin goaled for the visitors after Kevin Myers did well to keep the ball in play and Fossa followed up with two points, one after Cronin forced Adrian O’Connell to bring off a great save.

Gneeveguilla fought back with points from their chief marksman, Danny O’Sullivan, to level the game and while Fossa had the greater share of possession some bad wides meant that they could not transfer this dominance onto the scoreboard. Indeed after Eoin O’Connell and Gearoid Carmody swapped points, O’Sullivan sent Gneeveguilla in at the break a point to the good, 0-7 to 1-3.

Fossa dominated the third quarter and after Kevin Myers had three points on the trot , and Tommy Cronin another within ten minutes of the restart, it looked as if the winners would pull away from their opponents. However, they were not to score again until two minutes from time when Myers got their insurance score, but Gneeveuilla were unable to capitalise due mainly to some good defending by the Fossa rearguard and an over dependence on Danny O’Sullivan for their scores. O’Sullivan got their only score of the half in the 51st minute but despite the closeness of the scoring the homeside never looked like upsetting the formbook.

Teams and Scorers: Fossa: Peter O’Brien, Shane Malone, Tommy Cronin (0-1), Kevin O’Sullivan, Dan O’Sullivan, Frank McCarthy, Mark Dennehy, Fintan Coffey, Conor O’Keeffe (0-1), Mick O’Neill, Kenneth Clifford, Derry O’Sullivan, Eoin O’Connell (0-1), Mickey Cronin (1-1), Kevin Myers (0-4, 0-2 frees). Subs: Robbie Foley and Padraig Malone. Gneeveguilla “B”: Adrian O’Connell, Conor Hickey, Brendan Sheehan, Shane Dillane, Paudie Brosnan, John Sheehan, Kevin Donnelly, Mark Sheehan, Tommy Murphy, Philip Cremin (0-1 free), Aeneas O’Leary, Tommy Gleeson, Aonghus O’Leary, Danny O’Sullivan (0-5, 0-2 frees), Gearoid Carmody (0-2). Subs: Eugene O’Leary and Moss O’Keeffe.

Referee: Michael O’Donoghue (Glenflesk)

Listry 2-10 Spa “B” 1-7

Two goals in as many minutes late in the game were the difference between two otherwise evenly matched sides at Listry as the homeside advanced to the quarter finals. Pat Cronin and Ger O’Shea swapped points early on and O’Shea had added his second before Pat Cronin goaled for the visitors. Listry added further points from Ger O’Shea and Derry Ahern to one in reply from Brian Darcy and at the break the sides were on level terms, 0-6 to 1-3. On the restart, John Foley and Sean Buckley for the homeside traded points with Pat Cronin and Ronan O’Sullivan before Spa went two up through Brian Darcy and Sean Morris. However, twenty three minutes in John Foley got the first of his side’s goals and a minute later David Nolan was fouled in the square and Derry Ahern goaled from the resultant penalty. Listry finished stronger with further points from David Nolan and Damien Clifford.

Scorers: Listry; Derry Ahern 1-4, John Foley 1-1, Ger O’Shea 0-3, Sean Buckley and Damien Clifford 0-1 each. Spa: Pat Cronin1-2, Brian Darcy 0-2, Andrew Fitzgerald, Ronan O’Sullivan and Sean Morris 0-1 each. Referee: Connie Carroll (Legion).

O’Sullivan Cup Roundup

Cordal withstood a late fight back by Rathmore “B” to qualify for the quarter finals with a late late point from Eamonn John O’Donoghue at Cordal. With O’Donoghue in fine form, Cordal had the better of the first half and a goal in injury time from a penalty by Sean Óg Ó Ciardubhain gave the homeside a 1-7 to 1-3 lead at the break, Rathmore’s goal coming from George O’Keeffe. Nine minutes into the new half, a second goal from Pat O’Sullivan put Cordal five points clear but points from Patrick McCarthy, a Jamie Cooper “45” and an equaliser from George O’Keeffe at the end of normal time saw Rathmore on level terms before O‘Donoghue‘s late point gave victory to the home side on a 2-11 to 1-13 scoreline.

Firies “B” overcame neighbours Currow “B” by 2-7 to 1-8 at Currow where two goals in the opening five minutes by Vincent Horgan and Shane O’Sullivan for Firies gave the visitors the perfect start. James Cahill got a goal back for Currow just before the break at which stage Firies led by 2-3 to 1-4. There was still two points between the sides at the three quarter stage and the same margin separated the sides at the finish.

Meanwhile in Lewis Road Dr Crokes “B” had a big win over Scartaglen who had to field their “B” side following their victory in the Intermediate championship. The homeside led by 3-6 to 0-1 at the break and finished up winners on a 3-15 to 1-2 scoreline.

O’Sullivan Cup Quarter Finals draw

The five winners from the first round are joined by the “B” teams of Kilcummin, Legion and Glenflesk who got byes to the quarter finals and the draw kept club and “B“ teams apart. The full draw is as follows: Firies “B” v Dr Crokes “B”; Fossa v Kilcummin “B”; Cordal v Glenflesk “B”; Legion “B” v Listry. First named teams have home venue and games will be played on Tuesday August 21st next.

O’Sullivan Cup Quarter Finals

Kilcummin “B” 1-14 Fossa 1-11

Kilcummin’s junior side caused a major shock at Fossa on Tuesday evening last when dumping the homeside out of the Central Car Sales O’Sullivan Cup after a game that needed extra time to separate the sides. Fossa of course were forced to lineout without county championship players such as Colin Myers, Domhnall O’Sullivan and Jimmy Falvey who were ineligible for this competition however that should not take one iota from Kilcummin’s victory. The visitors were really up for this game from the start and were it not for some tremendous saves from veteran goalkeeper Peter O’Brien, Kilcummin would not have needed extra time to advance.

The first half was fairly even and scores were level, three points apiece, at the end of the first quarter when O’Brien made the first fine save of the evening to deny Tadhg Brosnan a goal. Kilcummin lost Alan Moynihan to injury and Fossa wasted a number of good scoring chances through poor shooting including an effort from Mikey Cronin who shot over from close range after rounding goalkeeper Kieran Fleming. The half closed with O’Brien saving well from Robert Casey to keep his side a point to the good, 5 points to 4.

Fossa resumed in determined fashion and points from Conor O’Keeffe and Fintan Coffey were followed by a goal from Mikey Cronin who fielded a long delivery from Coffey and gave Kieran Fleming no chance. With Donald O’Dwyer Kieran Lynch and Richie O’Connor in fine form Kilcummin stayed in touch however and after Peter O’Brien denied Richie O’Connor with another fine save the former Crokes man was finally beaten in the 42nd minute when Donald O’Dwyer set up O’Connor to leave just a point between the sides. Fossa were playing in fits and starts and continued to be off target with their shooting but they were keeping their noses in front until Kieran Lynch landed a mighty effort from fifty yards to tie the scores (1-9 apiece) in the very last minute and force the game into extra time.

Kilcummin now smelled an upset was on the cards and outscored their opponents by 4 points to 2 in the first period of extra time with Kieran Lynch particularly prominent. As darkness descended there was just one score in the second period, a point from Kieran Lynch, and both sides finished with fourteen men following the dismissals of Fintan Coffey and Daniel O’Leary.

So Kilcummin’s second string did what their seniors could not do in the league final and their reward is a semi final place against Dr Crokes “B” as game that was due to be played on Tuesday evening of this week.

Teams and Scorers: Kilcummin; Kieran Fleming, John Herlihy, Kieran O’Doherty, Muiris Healy, Eric O’Connor, Alan Moynihan, Anthony O’Sullivan, Pat O’Donoghue, Daniel Kelly, Sean Lenihan, Kieran Lynch (0-8, 0-7 frees), Tadgh Brosnan, David Brosnan (0-2, 0-1 free), Richie O’Connor (1-1, 0-1 free), Donald O’Dwyer (0-3). Subs; Robert Casey, Daniel O’Leary, Damien Doolan, Daniel Brosnan.

Fossa: Peter O’Brien, Padraig Malone, Tommy Cronin, Kevin O’Sullivan, Mark Dennehy, Frank McCarthy, Robbie Foley, Fintan Coffey (0-1), Conor O’Keeffe (0-1), Derry O’Sullivan (0-1), Kenneth Clifford (0-1), Peter Shallow, Eoin O’Connell (0-1), Mikey Cronin (1-1), Kevin Myers (0-4, frees). Subs: Mick O’Connell (0-1), Sean O’Brien. Referee: Padraig O’Sullivan (Fossa).

Dr Crokes “B” 2-9 Firies “B” 1-11

Two goals within a minute of each other in the final five minutes of the game were the decisive scores as Dr Crokes secured victory in the O’Sullivan Cup quarter final tie at Farranfore on Tuesday evening last. The homeside had led for most of the game having overcome a poor start after Crokes had taken a 5 points to 1 lead inside the opening twelve minutes of play. Firies hit seven points without reply in the second quarter and led by 8 points to 5 at the break and still held that three point advantage until Jamie Doolan flicked a long ball to the net in the 55th minute to level the game. Soon after a long delivery from David Looney went all the way to the Firies net and though Jerry O’Sullivan hit back with a goal to level the game, Pat Hand secured victory with a point for the townside in the final minute. Scorers: Dr Crokes; Jamie Doolan 1-3, David Looney 1-0, Philip O’Connor, Johnny O’Sullivan, Pat Hand, Kevin Smith, Daithi Casey and Pat O’Connor 0-1 each. Firies; Mikey Daly 0-5, Jerry O’Sullivan 1-2, Eamonn Foley, Shane O’Sullivan, Noel McCarthy and Vincent Horgan 0-1 each.

Listry 2-20 Legion “B” 2-4

Listry were far too strong for Legion “B” in this O’Sullivan Cup quarter final tie played at Derreen on Tuesday evening last. The winners had half their tally,1-10, on the board by the half time break, all from play, with Ger O’Shea getting the goal, but Legion, with goals from Ted Healy and Rhys Farrell and three points from John McGillicuddy, kept in touch to trail by just four points, 1-10 to 2-3, at the interval. However with Derry Ahern Ger O’Shea and Damien Clifford dominating up front, Listry pulled away in the second half with Paul O‘Donoghue’s goal ensuring victory. Scorers: Listry; Ger O’Shea 1-6, Paul O’Donoghue 1-1, Derry Ahern, Damien Clifford and Jimmy O’Leary 0-3 each, Donal Sheehan 0-2, Stephen Brosnan and David Nolan 0-1 each. Legion “B“; John McGillicuddy 1-4, Rhys Farrell 1-0.

Cordal 0-14 Glenflesk “B” 0-13

(Game abandoned at half time in extra time).

This O’Sullivan Cup quarter final tie, which was moved to Glenflesk at short notice due to the condition of the Cordal pitch, was abandoned at half time in extra time due to fading light. Cordal looked to be well on their way to victory when leading by 10 points to 6 at the interval with the O’Donoghues, Eamon John, Padraig and Tim, getting seven of those scores. However, Glenflesk fought back strongly in the second period with good scores from Daniel Crowley and Evan Horan to level the scoring on 12 points each and force the game into extra time. Cordal held a point advantage at the interval in extra time but the referee decided that it was not safe to proceed in the fading light and both sides were due to meet again in Cordal on Tuesday evening of this week.

Cordal 2-13 Glenflesk “B” 1-4

Cordal made no mistake at the second time of asking when qualifying for a semi final meeting with Listry at Cordal on Tuesday of last week. The original fixture had been abandoned at half time in extra time due to fading light with Cordal a point to the good but the homside wasted little time putting down a marker in this game and sailed into a 1-8 to 0-3 halftime lead, the goal coming from Pat O’Sullivan five minutes from the break. The winners continued where they left off in the second half scoring 1-4 without reply, their second goal from Billy Cronin, before Evan Horan put some respectability on the scoreboard with a goal and a point for the visitors late in the game. Cordal and Listry will meet in the semi final on Tuesday evening next in Currow at 6.30 p.m.

Scorers: Cordal; Pat O’Sullivan 1-2, Billy Cronin 1-0, James O’Sullivan 0-3, Brian Reidy 0-2, Padraig O’Donoghue, Micheál Cahill and Maurice Costello 0-1 each.Glenflesk: Evan Horan 1-3, Daniel Crowley 0-1. Referee: Donie O’Connor (Rathmore).

Central Car Sales O’Sullivan Cup Semi Finals

Dr Crokes “B” 2-11 Kilcummin “B” 0-8

A goal and four points without reply in the first eleven minutes of the second half eased Dr Crokes into the final of the O’Sullivan Cup following a rather lifeless semi final tie at Lewis Rd on Tuesday of last week. Dr Crokes did not have to move into anything like top gear during the game against a Kilcummin side who badly missed their scoring heroes, Kieran Lynch and Donald Dwyer, from their shock win over Fossa on the previous week. And it was up front that the losers struggled throughout though the home keeper, David Neeson, must take some of the credit for this as he made a number of good saves especially in the second half when Kilcummin were chasing the game.

The first half of this encounter was a totally forgettable affair. Dr Crokes, aided by the fresh breeze, had three pointed frees from Daithi Casey before we had the first score from play by Kilcummin’s Sean Lenihan seventeen minutes in. Jamie Doolan and David Brosnan, both of whom were causing problems for their opponents, swapped points and David Neeson made the first of his fine saves denying Anthony O’Sullivan who added a point later in the half to leave Dr Crokes 5 to 3 ahead at the break.

The winners introduced Edmund O’Sullivan and Rory Mangan at the break, and two points from the former followed by two more from Philip O’Connor and Daithi Casey and a goal from a deft flick by Brian Clarke saw Crokes go ten points clear. In between Neeson did well to deny John Herlihy a goal that Kilcummin badly needed but the losers improved as the game wore on with Seanie O’Leary’s move out around the centre having the desired effect. On top territorially, Kilcummin points from O’Leary, Sean Lenihan and Pat O’Donoghue reduced the deficit but three bad wides from scoreable positions were to prove very costly. David Brosnan pointed and the same player was denied once again by Neeson in the Crokes goal but Crokes finished stronger with points from Rory Mangan and a goal on the call of time from sub Tomás Regan.

Teams and Scorers: Dr Crokes; David Neeson, Tommy Ryan, Brian O’Donoghue, Kevin Landers, John Bartlett, Ian Howard, Kevin Smith, James Jones, Daithi Casey (0-4 frees), Tommy Brosnan, Johnny O’Sullivan, Philip O’Connor (0-1), David Looney (0-1), Brian Clarke (1-0) Jamie Doolan (0-2). Subs: Rory Mangan (0-1), Edmund O’Sullivan (0-2), Chris Egan, Shane Kavanagh, Tomás Regan (1-0). Kilcummin: Kieran Fleming, Eric O’Connor, Kieran O’Doherty, Muiris Healy, John Herlihy, Sean Brosnan, Anthony O’Sullivan (0-1), Pat O’Donoghue(0-1), Danny O’Leary, Sean Lenihan (0-2, 0-1 free), Richie O’Connor, Daniel Kelly, David Brosnan (0-3, 0-2 frees), Seanie O’Leary (0-1 free), Robert Casey. Sub; Damien Doolan. Referee: Donal Casey (Scartaglen).

Cordal 1-6 Listry 0-8

A goal in the fifth minute of injury time gave Cordal a dramatic victory over Listry in this Central Car Sales O’Sullivan Cup semi final played in Currow on Tuesday evening last. Scores were at a premium throughout this game, especially during a second half in which there were just five scores in total.

Eamonn John O’Donoghue for Cordal and Damien Clifford for Listry exchanged early pointed frees and as Cordal missed some scoresble chances, Listry forged 4 points to 2 ahead by the seventeenth minute thanks to points from Derry Aherne (2) and Billy O’Brien, Billy Cronin replying for the eventual winners. The O’Sullivans, James and Pat found the range for Cordal to tie the scores once again and after John Brosnan gave Cordal the lead John Foley came up from his wing back position to make the scoring all square at the interval, five points apiece.

Sean Canty pointed Cordal into the lead once more four minutes into the new half and we had to wait another eleven minutes for the next score, an equalising point from a Derry Aherne free. The fare continued to be poor with both sides guilty of mistakes and missed chances and thirteen further minutes elapsed before Derry Aherne pointed Listry back in front after he himself received a high challenge. As normal time elapsed, Cordal spurned two chances of equalising frees from Eamonn John O’Donoghue and a “45” by Sean Óg Ó Ciardubhaín. When Damien Clifford collected a Ger O’Shea effort that came back off the post and pointed deep into injury time it looked like curtains for Cordal however, in a last ditch effort, Sean Óg Ó Ciardubhaín’s 45 metre free fell to Maurice Costello and he drove the ball to the net to give his side a final meeting with Dr Crokes “B”.

Teams and Scorers: Cordal: Sean Óg Ó Ciardubhaín, Sean Canty (0-1), Mossie Enright, Ger Wrenn, Maurice Costello (1-0), Tim O’Donoghue, Michael Cronin, Eamonn John O’Donoghue (0-1), John Brosnan (0-1), Dean Poolman, James O’Sullivan (0-1), Billy Cronin (0-1), Colm Reidy, Micheal Cahill, Pat O’Sullivan (0-1). Subs: Colin Poolman and Sean Hughes. Listry: James Mannix, John Paul Mannix, Stephen Darmody, Anthony Sweeney, Aidan O’Donoghue, Kieran Murphy, John Foley (0-1), Stephen Brosnan, Sean Buckley, Billy O’Brien (0-1), Kieran O’Donoghue, Paul O’Donoghue, Derry Aherne (0-4), Michael Tangney, Damien Clifford (0-2). Subs: Danny Wrenn, David Nolan and Ger O’Shea.

Referee: Eddie Walshe (Rathmore).
