Referee Profiles

Charlie Farrelly (Cordal)

Charlie played minor football with his native Cavan before emigrating to London where he played with Holloway Gaels and Brian Boru's (Hurling). He
returned to Ireland in 1993 and threw in his lot with Cordal with whom he won Division 4 and 5 County League Medals, and an E.K. Senior League (Div.2) Medal.

He has refereed Novice Championship and Shield finals at County level and Minor, Under 21, Senior League Finals,
and an O'Donoghue Cup semi and final (2003) at East Kerry level.
Charlie has served as Chairman of his club for a five year period and Secretary for a three year period. He is employed by Kerry County Council and has two daughters and a son.

Brendan O’ Riordan, Scartaglen

His big break came in 2002 when he took charge of the county minor championship final between
Mid Kerry and West Kerry, and the O’ Donoghue Cup Final between Dr. Crokes and Rathmore; as well as the East Kerry under-21 final.

Brendan, who has a keen interest in all sports, served as club secretary for five years and is a garage
owner by profession. He is married to Veronica and they have two children, Eilish and Brian. They reside in Ballyheigue.
He also took charge of the 2004 O'Donoghue Cup final between Dr Crokes and Rathmore.

Donal Casey - Scartaglen.

In 2005 he refereed his first O'Donoghue Cup final having also taken charge of the semi final between Rathmore and Spa. He has refereed at county championship level and also refereed the county Minor semi final and county Novice finals in 2005.

His playing career at senior level with Scartaglen spanned a period of over twenty years and he subsequently went on to train the team for two years and has also had a few periods as a selector with the club.

A carpenter/window installer with Munster Joinery, Donal is married to Mary and they have two children, Bríd and Niall. His usual umpires are his quartet of Mike Murphy, Jack O'Connor, Donie Murphy and his son, Niall.

John McSweeney - Kilcummin

John played senior football with his native Kilcummin for about twelve years and took up refereeing ten years ago. In recent years he has also served the club as a selector at Under-21 and Minor level. A Telecom Eireann employee, John is married to Noreen and they have four children, Christina, Shane, Kevin and Fíona.

Padraig O'Sullivan - Firies

Padraig, who still togs out for the junior side, has played in all grades for his native Club, Firies, winning an O'Sullivan Cup medal, and is also involved in the administrative side of the Club being Treasurer for the past four years. His refereeing career began in 2002 with Coíste na n-Óg and he has made a rapid progression up through the ranks since then culminating in his taking charge of this years senior county final between Feale Rangers and South Kerry just a couple of weeks ago. He has been refereeing at Provincial level for the past 3 years and this year on the inter-county front he took charge of Cork and Limerick in the Under 21 championship and Cork and Waterford in the Minor championship.

Padraig likes the friends you make, and the characters you meet, through the GAA but feels that the facilities for both referees and their team of officials are inadequate at many venues. He takes an interest in other sports such as Rugby and Soccer and names Mick Galwey and Roy Keane as two of his favourite sporting heroes. His favourite footballers are, not surprisingly, Donal Daly and Seamus Moynihan and he likes to relax by listening to his favourite singer, Christy Moore, and looking at Killinascully!
