In
1971 the East Kerry Bord na Nóg was founded. The main purpose
of Board na Nóg was to organise under age competitions amongst
clubs. This does not say that Juvenile football was ignored prior
to 1971. For the first 70 years of the G.A.A from its formation
in 1884, the G.A.A in Kerry provided very little competition for
under age footballers.
Post Primary schools and colleges did work in running competitions
like the Dunloe Cup and O'Sullivan Cup in Kerry, leading on to Munster
and All Ireland Hogan Cup. Until the intorduction of free education
and the school bus the vast majority of boys, especially in rural
areas, had no way of attending those schools and so a juveniles
they never savoured the joy of wearing a football jersy.
In 1954 at the East Kerry Board Senior Convention, at the request
of Tadhg O'Sullivan, N.T Lissivigeen a resolution was passed sponsoring
a National Schools Competition. This competition was very successful
for the next ten years but then declined. The mantle of organising
juvenile football was taken on board again in 1968 by Tadhg O'Sullivan
and Tom Long, N.T Fossa, which really only catered for Killarney
and Fossa. Under the Charimanship of Fr. James Linnane and secretary
Pat Favier, East Kerry Bórd na Nóg was formed to run
juvenile competitions for East Kerry Clubs-namely Rathmore, Gneeveguilla,
Glenflesk, Spa, Dr. Crokes, Legion, Kilcummin, Firies, Fossa and
Listry. It has also taken under its umbrella in the last few years
Currow, Scartaglen and Kenmare.
Since
then Bórd na Nóg has been organising competitions
for juveniles at all ages from under 11 to under 16. In 1977/78
its also organised a very successful interschool 7 a-side football
for boys and girls and also sports events. Many players from the
district have worn teh green and gold of Kerry having gone through
the Bord na Nóg system. it has culminated with two of those
players bringing home Sam Maguire to Kerry, namely Ambrose O'Donovan
in 1984 and Seamus Moynihan in 2000.
