O’Donoghue Cup Quarter Final
Gneeveguilla 2-9 Glenflesk 0-11
Gneeveguilla and Glenflesk served up an exciting O’Donoghue Cup quarter Final in Gneeveguilla on Saturday. Heavy rain during the game failed to dampen the determination of two teams who strived might and main to a get result which was in doubt until the closing minutes. Damien McCarthy opened the scoring with a point from a free for Glenflesk in the opening minutes. Two long range frees by Liam Murphy put Gneeveguilla ahead by 0-2 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes. The players were now coming to term with conditions and scores became more frequent. Points from James O’Sullivan and Shane Denehy gave Glenflesk the lead again before a point from John Paul Brosnan had the side’s level. Gneeveguilla substitute Mike Murphy and Glenflesk’s Mike O’Shea exchanged scores before Gneeveguilla put two points between the teams courtesy of scores from Danny O’Sullivan and Liam Murphy. But just on the stroke of half time Glenflesk’s Shane Dennehy pulled one back to leave the half time score at 0-6 to 0-5 in favour of Gneeveguilla.
Glenflesk equalized just after the resumption through Damien McCarthy, but Danny O’Sullivan had Gneeveguilla in front after four minutes. Then came what looked to be the turning point of the game when Mike Murphy goaled for Gneeveguilla to put four points between the sides. This goal however spurred on the Glenflesk outfit. They took control of proceedings and kicked five unanswered points to put them into a 0-11 to 1-7 lead with fifteen minutes to go. Damien McCarthy kicked three of those points while James O’Sullivan and Mike O’Shea kicked the other two. With their backs to the wall and against the wind Gneeveguilla had to dig deep to respond to the Glenflesk challenge. Don Murphy and John Paul Brosnan led the Gneeveguilla response and their side rallied. Danny O’Sullivan pointed again putting the sides level. Entering the last five minutes the game was up for grabs. Gneeveguilla substitute Ronan McAuliffe gave Gneeveguilla the lead with a point. Then came the vital score of the game. A ball into the Glenflesk square wasn’t cleared and Gneeveguilla’s Liam Murphy pounced, striking the ball to the net. Good defensive work by Gneeveguilla - especially a good save by Pa Riordan – kept a determined Glenflesk at bay in the closing minutes and the home side prevailed on a score of Gneeveguilla 2-9 Glenflesk 0-11.
Glenflesk best performers on the day were Donal O’Sullivan at the back, Seamus Moynihan in midfield while Damien McCarthy, Mike O’Shea and James O’Sullivan always looked a threat upfront.
For Gneeveguilla, Owen Lawlor at full back Don Murphy at midfield while Liam Murphy John Paul Brosnan and substitute Mike Murphy contributed most.
Gneeveguilla now qualify’s for the O’Donoghue Cup semi-final in what will be a mouth-watering local derby against Rathmore.
Referee: Eddie Walsh (Rathmore)
In the Fr Galvin Cup, Fossa defeated neighbours Listry at Listry on Saturday last. The final score there was Fossa 0-7 Listry 1-1. Fossa will now meet Cordal in the final of the Intermediate championship for the Fr Galvin Cup. That game will be played next Saturday November 14th at 2PM.
In the East Kerry Minor “A” Championship quarter final, Kilcummin had an easy victory over Rathmore 3-10 to 0-5 played in Rathmore on Saturday last. That win brings Kilcummin into the semi-final against Firies. Dr Crokes will play Legion in the other semi-final at Lewis Road. Both of those games are scheduled for next Saturday Nov 14th at 2PM.
There was a good attendance from East Kerry clubs at the Club Day in the INEC Centre in the Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday last. The day featured keynote speeches and a series of workshops on topics about club administration with presentations from various experts. In the afternoon, Pat Spillane stole the show with a wide ranging and thought provoking key note speech about the difficulties facing rural GAA clubs, rural schools and rural communities. Pat also outlined his views about the current state of Gaelic Football. Pats big message to clubs and the Munster Council was that “We have spent enough money on bricks and mortar.... it’s now time to put substantial money into coaching players and team running expenses”. Pat said that population change in rural Ireland is threatening clubs and he gave the example of his own club Templenoe which had five national schools in the 1960’s. Now there is no national school in the parish. Pat was critical of the planning strategy which is pushing the population out of the countryside towards urban areas.
On the state of the game of football, Pat was critical of the possession game and the negative approach adopted by teams from juvenile teams up to inter county teams. He is disappointed to see the demise of the long kick. He gave us some statistics from recent games. In the Leinster final, there were 286 hand passes. In the Kerry v Meath game this year, Kerry only kicked 19 balls further than 30 metres while in the Tyrone v Kildare game Tyrone only managed 10 long kicks. Pat also identified player indiscipline as a major problem. He gave us examples of recent games where referees had been physically assaulted and he was critical of the major efforts that clubs and counties make to have players exonerated after they have committed assaults on the field rather than have the player say “I am sorry”.
On Saturday night in the Gleneagle Hotel, a large attendance turned out for the launch of Jimmy Darcy’s book “Forged in Green and Gold” – a very readable account of Kerry GAA over the past 125 years. Jimmy puts GAA activities in context by reminding us of National and International events and then describing the various events in Kerry GAA. The book is over 230 pages packed with information and pictures. Great credit is due to Jimmy for this work and his efforts were acknowledged at the launch by Jerome Conway, Murt Murphy and Weeshie Fogarty who formerly launched the book. This book will make an excellent present for GAA people this Christmas.
Best wishes to Spa on Sunday next as they take on the Tipperary champions Carrick Swans in the Munster Intermediate Club Championship in Fitzgerald Stadium.
East Kerry Scor na nOg finals will be held on next Saturday Nov14th, at 6PM in Rathmore Community Centre.
