Honorary Secretary’s Report for 2008 Convention
A Cháirde go leir,
On behalf of the East Kerry Committee I wish to welcome you all to our convention tonight.
2007 was a very busy & long year with competitions commencing on February 3rd and finishing with the U-21 competition final in mid December. The Board ran 14 competitions during the year and playing 133 competitive games in all grades. The number of games was a reduction on other years due to fewer games played in the novice and junior league division two.
There were many highlights in the past year with Kerry regaining the All Ireland Senior Football Final for the 2nd year in the row, the launch of the St Pats hurling clubs crest, the launch of their book and their success on the playing field. The winning of four Scór All Ireland titles by East Kerry clubs.
C.C.C.: This was the new name for the fixture committee and this committee also dealt with referee reports for any incidents that occurred on the field of play. This hardworking and dedicated committee met on 11 occasions in a busy year, sometimes at short notice.
It was very disappointing on a few occasions during the year when games in the O’Donoghue cup were fixed at C.C.C. meetings and had to be postponed a few days later due to Kerry players not been released to play with their clubs several weeks prior to championship games.
The U-21 competition suffered very much in the past year in a championship started on the first weekend of February and it took until mid December to play the final, due to the success of the Kerry colleges, Kerry U-21 team and then the Kerry senior team.
.
Committee were: Chairman Tadgh Fleming, Secretary Michael Pigott, Johnny Barry, Michael O‘Donoghue, Michael O’Mahony, Dermot O’Mahony and Pat O’Donoghue.
Referees committee: Vice Chairman Dermot Griffin was chairman of this Committee and with his secretary Louise Noonan did an outstanding job during 2007 securing referees for all our games. In all 18 referees officiated for the Board including the introduction of two new referees. Many thanks.
East Kerry Teams: The East Kerry senior teams did not have any major success in the past year. The senior team prepared well under the management of manager Sean Counihan, his selectors Donie Sheehan and Dermot O’Mahony. The senior team defeated Shannon Rangers and Austin Stack in the earlier rounds, in the Qtr Final they met near neighbours Kilcummin, which they lost narrowly.
The U-21 team were under the senior team management, after getting a bye in round one they were drawn against St Brendan’s in the Qtr- final in which was a repeat of the 2006 final. This game was played in Kilmoyley, after an excellent performance East Kerry emerged victorious. They met St Kieran’s in the semi final, after a below par performance and the loss of key players they were defeated.
This team are at the moment competing in the Credit Union sponsored Duhallow U-21 invitation cup. After been beaten by Duhallow in the first round, the U-21 team have put up excellent performances defeating St. Kieran’s, Nemo Rangers and Avondhu to reach the final against Duhallow which will be played on this Saturday night in Knocknagree and we wish them all the best.
The minor team under the management of trainer Jimmy O’Shea, selectors Neily Kerins and Donie McCarthy played a very strong West Kerry side in Spa that fielded several Kerry minors in the first round unfortunately they lost to the eventual county champions.
I wish to thank all the trainers and selectors for all their hard work and dedication during the past year.
County Teams: The Kerry senior football was victorious in winning the Sam Maguire for the 2nd year in a row. Well done to all concerned with Kerry’s victory, manager Pat O’Shea, selectors Sean and Dave Geaney, trainer John Sugrue and the backroom team from the East Kerry District Harry O’Neill, Dan O’Sullivan and Niall Botty O’Callaghan. East Kerry was well represented in the panel once more this year and I would like to congratulate all these players.
The Kerry minor and U-21 teams did not have much luck in the past year. I wish to thank all the players and mentors from East Kerry area who were involved.
Scór: 2007 was another fantastic year for Scór in East Kerry clubs winning four all Ireland titles. In doing so this was the sixth year in a row that an All Ireland title has come to the East Kerry District.
In Athlone the Kilcummin Scór na nÓg set dancers were victorious in February. On home soil in the I.N.E.C Killarney three senior titles were won by East Kerry clubs the Spa figure dancers and set dancers and Rathmore question time team.
This shows the strength of Scór in the Division. Full credit is due to East Kerry Scór Officer Ann Mangan and the Scór Officer in all the ten clubs for all the excellent work that’s been done to promote Scór.
Hurling: It was a special year for St. Pats Hurling Club with their success on and off the field. Earlier in the year they launched their club crest and in the summer time they launched their 25-year club history “Kindling St. Pats Flame” which was an excellent publication and great credit is due to John O’Leary and the hard working committee.
On the playing field it was also a fantastic year for St. Pats claiming three titles, the Kerry County Junior Hurling Championship, South Kerry Junior Hurling Championship and the South Kerry Novice Hurling Championship and on Sunday last St. Pats represented Kerry in the Munster Junior B. Championship in Templeglantine.
Well done to Hurling Officer Pat Delaney and his fellow officers for the promotion of hurling in East Kerry.
Sponsors: I wish to thank all sponsors of the Board for their support and generosity during the past year. Without the support of these sponsors the committee could not operate.
Sympathy: On a sad note the East Kerry District lost some outstanding G.A.A. Gaels during the past year notable Listry's Scór Officer Kathleen O’Mahony, Currow's delegate Denis O’Connor, Currow player Thomas Mitchell, and I wish also to express deepest sympathy to all those who suffered bereavements during the past year.
General: In my first year as Runaí of the East Kerry Board I am honoured to work with an excellent group of officers. I wish to thank all the officers for their help and guidance in the past year, the members, the sub committees and the ever reliable gatemen for all their hard work. I would also like to thank the officers and especially the secretaries of all the clubs for the courtesy and working relationship we built up.
I would also like to thank all the clubs who made their pitches available for neutral venues and the officers and the committee of the Fitzgerald Stadium for the use of the pitch.
Tonight we lose two excellent officers in Chairman Ger Galvin who has given several years of service as delegate, secretary and chairman of the Board. I wish Ger. all the best in his new role as County Development Officer.
John O’Leary is also stepping down as PRO after many years of hard work. I wish John all the best and without doubt we will see John returning in some role in years to come.
Finally I wish everyone all the very best in the year ahead
Thanks
Michael O'Pigoid

New Chairman - Dermot Griffin’s Address to Convention.
In his maiden address as chairman, Dermot Griffin told delegates that he had a hard act to follow. He thanked his Club, Fossa for nominating him and thanked the clubs of the Division and his fellow officers for their support during his time as vice chairman. He also paid tribute to all the Referees with whom he had worked closely over the past seven years.
Looking ahead, he said that coaching would be high on his priority list while chairman. Vince Cooper, he said, was doing outstanding work as coaching officer for East Kerry. Another item high on his agenda he said would be Bórd na n-Óg which was once again under the jurisdiction of the East Kerry Board; “I look forward to greater co-operation between Bórd na n-Óg and the senior Board” he said. He also promised to continue financing the resources for the continued development of hurling in the Division.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Treasurers, Andy O’Sullivan and Pat O’Donoghue reported that, while income was down approx. €7,000 on the previous year, the accounts still showed a working profit of over €2,000 for the year. Gate takings were down, mainly due to a Saturday O’Donoghue Cup Final, while takings in Scór were also down on the previous year.
East Kerry Senior and U-21 Teams
I would like to acknowledge both the Spa and Fossa GAA clubs for making their facilities available to the team to prepare for the championship. I would like to think that we performed reasonable well with the handicap that injuries placed upon us at a vital stage of the competition.
However, I would be of the opinion that clubs will have to be a bit fairer in allowing the team to prepare for these vital games. We had agreed that a designated night would be made available to the team but some clubs saw fit to arrange challenge games on the night designated to the preparation of the team and this put unfair demands on players and did not help the situation. We tried to play games against all teams affiliated with the team and this gave us a look at most players available for selection. Some other players rather than those involved were requested to participate in the squad. Other commitments and lack of interest or time factors stopped some players from engaging with the squad.
I wish to thank my selectors Donie Sheehan and Dermot O’Mahony who worked very hard during the year. I would recommend that the Board might appoint a Liaison Officer between the clubs and the East Kerry team so as to ensure that we can prepare in a more positive way for the year ahead.
Thanking you all for your co-operation.
Sean Counihan
East Kerry Minors
East Kerry Minors made there exit from the County Championship in the first round against West Kerry who went on to win the Championship. We had 10 training sessions and three challenge games to prepare for this match. It was very difficult to get all the players together at any one time. I would like to thank Dermot Griffin and selectors Neily Kerins and Donie McCarthy who put in a huge effort also the Spa club for the use of these facilities.
Jimmy O’Shea. - Trainer
Referees Committee Secretary Report 2007
2007 will be regarded as an extremely successful year as far as referees are concerned. Referees were appointed for 133 games, including linesmen for O’Donoghue Cup games, over the past year.
The Board had 18 referees officiating during the year. During 2007, we also welcomed 2 new referees, Eddie Walsh and Michael Brosnan, who have already proven to be a huge asset to the board.
I would like to thank most sincerely all the referees for all their help, co-operation and their willingness to assist and help me in any way which they could. I have a great relationship with all the referees and they made my job very easy and I thank them all for that.
I wish to also thank all the clubs, their officers and mentors for their help and co-operation. My thanks also to the Board Officers. I wish to sincerely thank Dermot Griffin, for all his help, encouragement, guidance and support throughout the year. Also to the Board Secretary Michael Pigott, who was always there with his help and guidance and also for keeping me fully supplied with reports and envelopes! Their support was very much appreciated and I am grateful to them for that.
Also I wish to appeal to all the clubs, especially the bigger ones within the Board, to put forward people who would be interested in refereeing in the coming year, as with an increasing fixtures list, we need as many referees as we can get.
Finally, I feel that referees don’t get enough support from clubs for the hard and difficult job they do. I would ask all clubs to make people available to act as umpires and linesmen for any occasion where a referee may be missing an official.
Wishing all concerned the best for 2008.
Thank you,
Louise Noonan
East Kerry Board Referees Secretary
SCOR 2007-2008
Cathaoirleach, fellow officers and delegates, I am pleased to report for the sixth consecutive year East Kerry clubs have brought the highest accolades to be achieved in Scor back to the county, namely in Scor na nOg, Kilcummin brought the Set Dancing title having last achieved this title in 2002.
In Scor Sinsear, Spa continue to dominate the Set Dancing, making it four in a row of All-Ireland titles in 20007. Spa also became champions in the Figure dancing. This is the second time they have won the double dancing titles, 2004 , being the last time. Rathmore kept the flag flying in the question time, winning their second All Ireland in this keen competition, winning it last in 1995, so four titles to East Kerry is to be highly commended. While this success is admirable for the clubs involved, all the other clubs are making a huge contribution to Scor in East Kerry. All competitors efforts are to be praised whether they compete in the first round or final rounds.
At last year’s convention Scor na nOg teams were preparing for the Munster Final. Glenflesk Figure dancers were knocked out at this stage but their Solo Singer, Michelle O’Callaghan and Ballad Group were successful, as were the Kilcummin Set Dancers. The All-Ireland was held in Athlone on Feb. 16th. Michelle lost out in a very high standard singing competition. The ballad group tied for first place but regretably lost their title to a marking system. The Kilcummin Set Dancers crowned themselves in glory dancing the Roscommon Lancers. Well done to all these young people, regardless of results they are a credit to their parents and clubs.
A review of last years Scor Sinsear competition which started on 9th Feb. is as follows;
The following emerged victorious and all winners contested the Co. Final held in the Gleneagle in March. Spa won the best overall club in East Kerry and at the Co. Final. Congratulations to the Spa Scor Officer Sheila Mc Carthy for her tireless efforts.
Rince-Foirne------------ Spa
Amhranaoicht- Aonair----Spa (Ciara O’Donovan)
Ceol Uirlise----------------Glenflesk
Aithriseoireacht-----------Spa (Ray O’Sullivan)
Bailead- Ghrupa-.---------Spa
Trath na gCeisteanna---- Rathmore
Nuachleas----------------- Spa
Rince-Seit----------------- Spa
Spa, Rathmore and Glenflesk became Co. Champions, Spa in Ballad group,Figure Dancing and Set-Dancing,Rathmore in question time and Glenflesk in Music. They all progressed to the Munster Final held in the I.N. E. C.31st March. At this stage the Spa ballad group and Solo Singer lost out following super performances.
Spa, Rathmore and Glenflesk kept the flag flying in the I.N.E.C. at the All Ireland Fnal at the end of April. Glenflesk gave a fine performance in the music competition, but success wasnt to be theirs on the day. It was here that Spa completed the double dancing titles and Rathmore raised the roof when they won the question time. Before I move on to this years Scor I would like to say Buiochas to the following, our sponsors, Killarney Credit Union, John O Leary for his comprehensive reports throughout the year, O’Leary Printing for producing all the Scor programmes, David Rae for supplying the trophies, Danny Healy and his team in the Aras Phadraig, to Radio Kerry for their coverage of all Scor competitions, thanks to the journalists and photographers of our local papers who are always present at our Scor competitions. A special thanks to Mike O Riordan and Donal O’Keeffe who acted as Fear a Tí and Mary Philpott who was Bean a Tí at this year’s Scór na nÓg and as usual, ably assisted by Mike Piggott. To the ticket sellers, stewards, adjudicators, O’Sullivan Sound and especially the Club Scor Officers, who are contributing greatly to the success we are currently enjoying. Mile Buiochas.
Scor na nÓg 07-08 was held in Nov. and run over two nights again. It is heartening to see all ten clubs participating and special credit must go to the Legion for entering all eight items for the second consecutive year. Well done to their Scor officer Linda O’Donoghue for her trojan work. As usual the standard was extremely high and many of the non prize-winners would do us proud in an All-Ireland final. The following were victorious:
GLENFLESK: Rince-Foirne
Amhranaoicht-Aonair
Aithriseoireach
Ceoil-Uirlise
Trath na gCeisteanna
LEGION: Nuachleas
KILCUMMIN: Ballad-Group
Set Dancing
Glenflesk became Co.Champions in Amhranaoicht-Aonair and Question Time. Kilcummin in Ballad Group and Set Dancing. Both clubs are currently preparing for the Munster Semi Final and I wish them well on 5th Jan. in Millstreet.
This years Scor season started with a great sadness, due to the untimely death of a great Scor stalwarth, Kathleen O Mahoney, Listry R. I. P. Kathleen was a hard working Scor Officer for the Listry club and right up to the time of her death she was making sure that Listry would be represented in Scor this year. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle nature and she has left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all but especially by her husband Sean, her daughters, Ciara and Aoife, her mother Kathleen, and sisters Noreen and Geraldine. Ar Dheis De go raibh a h-anam usal.
Finally, thanks to Ger and all the officers of the Board for their continued support throughout the year and i would like to take this opportunity to wish Ger every success in his new role in the County Board. Our loss is their gain. Wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous new year.
Ann Mangan

Hurling Officers Report
St Pats (East Kerry) Hurling Club had a very successful year in 2007 our 25th Anniversary Year.
We launched our Club Crest, had a very successful launch of our book “Kindling St Patrick’s Flame” which is proving to be a best seller. We were very fortunate to have a very good Editor in John O’Leary and a very hard working committee. We also had a very successful golf outing in Ross Golf Club.
What a playing year we had we won the Kerry Co. Junior Hurling Championship, South Kerry Junior Hurling Championship, South Kerry Novice Hurling Championship and we are representing Kerry in the Munster Junior B Club Hurling Championship. We have been drawn against Templeglantine in the quarter final on Sun Jan 13th 2008.
Thanks to our Team Manager Mike Ryan selectors Denis Russell and Tom Holohan and a special mention to Pat O’Brien for all the coaching sessions along with Cormac Bonner and Turlouch Bonner who made sure the players were in great shape.
Our panel of players gave great commitment during the year captain John O’Halloran gave great leadership and led by example it was encouraging to have three minors and five under 21 players in our panel and argues well for the future.
Dr. Crokes were very unlucky to loose out in the Co. Intermediate Hurling Championship quarter final to Kenmare after extra time and thanks to John Lenihan, Brendan Keogh, David Cotter and Pat Kenneally for their support all year...
Dr Crokes continue to trojan work promoting juvenile hurling. It is also encouraging to see juvenile hurling recommenced in Spa. Thanks to Dr. Crokes, Spa, Legion and Beaufort for the use of their facilities during the year and thanks to Mike Leahy for his continued promotion of hurling in St Brendan’s.
We must continue to request hurling coaching for St Oliver’s Primary School and all schools in East Kerry as this is the future of hurling and again we appeal to all concerned to listen to our plea.
Mike Leahy did not seek re election as Secretary at our AGM, Mike was a very efficient secretary for the last two years and the club is all the better for his efforts. Thanks Mike and I know you will be still involved in the Club.
Congratulations to our new Secretary Denis O’Donoghue.
Thanks to Ger Galvin East Kerry Board Chairman and his fellow officers for their continued support...
Congratulations to Ger on his new appointment of Co. Board Development Officer in his role as Secretary and Chairman of the East Kerry Board, Ger always gave great support to St Pats and thanks again Ger.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT TO CONVENTION
The past year, as always, has been another busy one for those of us entrusted with the reporting on, and promotion of, our games here in East Kerry and hopefully, by giving our activities a high profile, we will keep both the public informed and also ensure that our Gaelic games are fully promoted.
Presentation: It gives me great pleasure, after years of preaching, to report that the presentation of our games in general continues to improve especially with regard to being properly turned out on match days - even in some of our “less important” fixtures. Over the years, I have had ongoing battles (even a disagreement or two!) with certain clubs over their lack of presentation on the field of play. To give credit where credit is due, I am delighted to see that these clubs have seen the light in recent years and indeed some are now leading the way when it comes to showing their true colours both on and off the field. Most clubs now put a big emphasis on club leisure wear, at all ages, and this is a departure that is very welcome and to be highly commended.
The practise of clubs not adhering to regulations on big match days, especially on O’Donoghue Cup final day, continues to exist however and in my opinion, the provision of proper scoreboard and public address facilities should be a pre requisite for the staging of “home” O’Donoghue Cup games .
Programmes: Programmes were again provided free of charge for all of our big games and my thanks to all who co-operated with the provision of teams in advance. On a few occasions, teams that bore no relation to the eventual line-up were forwarded by team managers whom it would appear have little regard for their own club officers or supporters not to mention the paying public at large.
My thanks to all who assisted with the publishing of the O’Donoghue Cup final programme, both this year and down through the years. The programme brings in valuable financial assistance for both Bórd na n-Óg and St Pats Hurling club.
Website: Our dedicated Website, www.eastkerrygaa.com continues to prosper thanks to the excellent skills of Kieran Herlihy and Mike Moynihan, (who updates the site from the USA). All fixtures and results are promptly updated and content and features are being enhanced on an ongoing basis. My thanks to Michelle Cooper-Galvin for providing the excellent photographs while Con O’Sullivan is also to be congratulated for the continued maintenance of the special Website dedicated to the O’Sullivan Cup www.owenosullivancup.net. The feed back from our exiles, who depend on the Web for their local GAA news, is very gratifying and complimentary.
Results: In the ten years I have been involved, the returning of results has generally been the same every year - good and bad. This year has been no different. Generally speaking, we see the same offenders all of the time, and before matches are played on any busy weekend, one can predict in advance who will, and who will not, return the results. This is particularly true at Minor level, the one grade that really should get maximum publicity.
Last year I mentioned that clubs should not be slow to recruit younger members for the PRO position, all of whom have the necessary computer skills and the time for the job. However it does not always suffice to appoint a person with the necessary computer skills on their own. These people will very often have to be fed the necessary match reports, team and club news etc from other sources within the club and in this regard I would urge clubs to appoint joint or assistant PROs where necessary. My thanks to The Heights Hotel for their continued sponsorship of Aertel, Page 463.
Media: My thanks once again to the printed media and Radio Kerry for the excellent coverage that they continue to give to our games. Two of the three main newspapers in the county have dedicated columns for Divisional Boards and Radio Kerry are to be congratulated on their Divisional Board hour on Saturdays and the general coverage that they give to gaelic games. The various photographers are also to be complimented and I urge clubs to give them every assistance on match days by providing a numbered team lineout.
Communications Committee: My thanks to Michelle Cooper-Galvin (Fossa), Kieran Herlihy (Spa) and Mike Moynihan (Gneeveguilla) who make up the Communications Committee along with the PRO.
A detailed results sequence for 2007 is attached for record purposes.
Epilogue: It is hard to believe that ten long years have gone by since I first put pen to paper following my appointment as Board PRO on March 10th 1998. I must say that I enjoyed the experience thoroughly. I worked alongside some very able administrators all of whom had the good of the Board at heart at all times. The Board was very well streamlined when I joined it and as the years go on, it is probably becoming even more so. This may hide the Trojan work being done behind the scenes in committees such as Fixtures (now the CCC) and Referees Committee.
Fixtures have always been a problem, particularly when it comes to the O’Donoghue Cup competition. Yet despite, All Irelands at senior and minor level, County Championships, Compromise Rules, Munster Club Championship, availability of Fitzgerald Stadium etc. etc. our major competition has always been completed before Christmas. With the advent of the All Ireland Intermediate and Junior championships, other Divisional Boards are now seeing at first hand how difficult a task this can be. Another major problem when it comes to fixtures is the eligibility of talented minor players in particular, for a wide range of competitions. This year for instance, through no fault of their own I may add, Jamie Doolan played in four E.K. championship finals, his colleague Johnny Buckley in three.
There are other tasks, equally less glamorous, that have to be performed when an Officer of the Board. One of those is being a member of what is generally known as the GPC where tough decisions have to be made and sanctions handed down. Contrary to general belief, I have yet to meet someone who got any great satisfaction from disciplining clubs or players. We made tough decisions over the years, some of them unpopular ones, however, we were only applying the rules as per Official Guide.
High points were the norm over the past ten years, and there were many of them. East Kerry completing the 3-in-a-row, Currow winning their first O’Donoghue Cup, Gneeveguilla bridging a twenty year gap in the same competition, the large number of high profile county players adorning our competitions, organising the welcome home for victorious Kerry teams, the publication of a history of the O’Donoghue Cup and helping out with Congress when a former chairman of the East Kerry Board was Uachtarán of CLG, were chief among the high points of my time in office.
With thirteen clubs (and a Hurling club of course!) to play around with, there was always a story to be told. There is no doubt a big gap exists between the so called big and small clubs in the division however, giving equal coverage where possible to clubs and players of various grades was always utmost on my mind. The exploits of Scartaglen in this year’s O’Donoghue Cup campaign will hopefully give heart to all clubs in the lower divisions and hopefully the gap that exists will get narrower in the years ahead.
I had a good working relationship with the media down through the years, especially the various editors such as John Barry, Paul Brennan, John O’Mahony, Kieran McCarthy, Padraig Corkery, Con Dennehy, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Murt Murphy (who taught me a valuable lesson early on!) the O’Mahonys from Radio Kerry, Seamus and Joe and not forgetting Weeshie Fogarty.
To all of them, and the remainder of their staff at The Kerryman, Kerry’s Eye, The Kingdom, Killarney Advertiser and Outlook, Radio Kerry, and Radio na Gaeltachta, I say a very special “thank you”.
Another media group I wish to thank is the various photographers who have been very co-operative with me and generous to the Board over the past ten years; among them, Michelle Cooper-Galvin, Eamonn Keogh, Ger Cronin, Mike Brosnan, Don McMonagle and Con Dennehy
I want to sincerely thank my fellow officers and committee members with whom I have worked down through the years, the various club delegates who made up the Board and all the club officers and referees who were of great assistance to me in the course of carrying out my duties as PRO. Special thanks to Players of all grades who always gave me full co-operation not to mention hours of endless enjoyment. My thanks also to all involved in the Fitzgerald Stadium especially Con Griffin in the PA.
Finally, heartfelt thanks to Rosaria, Killian, Aóibheann and Áine who afforded me the opportunity of engaging in what has been a labour of love for the past decade.
When I wrote to clubs initially, informing them of my intention to contest the position of PRO, I stated that my main aim was “To raise the profile of the Board and the clubs within it by promoting their activities in local media outlets such as The Kerryman, Kerry’s Eye, The Kingdom, Killarney Advertiser and Outlook, Radio Kerry, and Radio na Gaeltachta and on Aertel”.
I hope I have achieved that aim, and maybe a bit with it. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.
John O’Leary, PRO Bórd Chiarraí Thoir CLG.
