Glenflesk are Junior League D2 Champions

Glenflesk 3-3 Firies 1-8

Glenflesk won the Patrick Doyle Haulage East Kerry Junior League Division 2 Final after a competent performance against Firies at Currow on Tuesday evening last. They proved again the adage that goals win games as they put three of the best past the hapless Paul Murphy in the Firies net. While the better shooting came from Firies, and they led on occasion by three points, those goals managed to keep Glenflesk in touch with Firies for much of the game. The loss of corner back Joseph O’Donovan to a red card in the second half might have upset the Glenflesk efforts but Firies forward division was well marshalled by the Glenflesk defence.

In the absence of Daniel Crowley, Kieran A O’Donoghue moved to midfield for Glenflesk and he, along with his replacement at wing back Stephen Lacey won much of the breaking ball around the middle of the field. Those two put in a hard hours work and they epitomised the  passion and commitment of  the Glenflesk side. However, it was the performance of Glenflesk corner forward Jeff O’Donoghue that stood out and his three goals were the rock on which Firies perished. Firies had fine performances from Donal Spring, John Hayes, Con & Eamon O’Mahony, Cormac Foley and Evan Sheehy and will be disappointed that they conceded those killer goals to Glenflesk.

The early minutes of the game were dramatic. Straight from the throw-in, Firies won a free on the wing. Con O’Mahony flighted the ball to the edge of the Glenflesk square. Evan Sheehy collected and in a fluid movement turned and shot past keeper Cian Horan. the Glenflesk response was swift and equally dramatic. Their best forward Jeff O’Donoghue took a fisted pass from Ollie Favier. He soloed 25 metres and ghosted past the defence to send a blistering shot to Paul Murphy’s net. The game was scarcely three minutes old and already we had witnessed two top class goals.  In a sweeping move started in their full back line, Firies worked the ball the length of the field and Even Sheehy gave Firies a one point lead. An Even Horan free for GLenflesk levelled matters before three points from corner forward Cormac Foley put Firies three clear after twenty five minutes. This was Firies best period of the game epitomised by the performance at full back of their captain Donal Spring and wing back John Hayes who cut out many promising Glenflesk attacks.  A free by full forward Evan Horan reduced the Glenflesk deficit to two points. As the game approached the short whistle, Glenflesk attacked down the wing; Jeff O’Donoghue collected pass 35 metres out and he powered his way past the Firies defence for the second time in the match to record his second goal. That score put Glenflesk ahead for the first time in the game. Half time Glenflesk 2-2 Firies 1-4.

The early minutes of the second half saw defences dominate keeping the forwards scoreless. However, it was Glenflesk that broke the stranglehold of the Firies defence when Stephen O’Donoghue broke through only to be pulled down in the square. Man of the match Jeff O’Donoghue made no mistake from the resulting penalty and Glenflesk was now four point s clear. But Glenflesk suffered a setback.  A serious indiscipline by corner back Joseph O’Donovan led to a red card from referee Harry Bartlett. The extra man brought Firies more into the game with substitute Ian Crowley and marksman Cormac Foley adding three points to come within a point of Glenflesk after eighteen minutes of the half – 1-7 to 3-2.  Firies could have pushed ahead for victory but were denied by staunch defending - full back Jeremy Moynihan leading by example for Glenflesk. A controlled and composed rearguard action by Glenflesk kept Firies scoreless for the remainder of the game although Cormac Foley did have a great chance of a goal which might have meant victory for Firies. Ollie Favier (Glenflesk) and corner back Donal O’Donoghue (Firies) traded points in the final minutes for Glenflesk to win by the narrowest of margins Glenflesk 3-3 Firies 1-8.

At the conclusion, East Kerry Board Chairman, Dermot Griffin presented the Tim Lenihan memorial Cup to John C O’Donoghue captain of Glenflesk.
