East Kerry Notes April 11th 2010
Currow wins Under 21 B Championship Final
Currow 1-9 Scartaglen/Cordal 0-9
In sunny but windy conditions at Scartaglen on Saturday, Currow defeated a Scartaglen/Cordal combination to lift the Pa Doyle Memorial Cup as Under 21 B Champions of East Kerry.
Currow midfield pair of Ian Somers and Sean McCarthy dominated exchanges while centre back Mike King and centre forward Pa McCarthy copper fastened Currows grip in vital positions.
Playing with a very strong wind in the first half, Currow piled on the scores. Two points apiece from Mike McCarthy and Pa McCarthy had them four clear after fifteen minutes before McCarthy scored the goal that proved decisive at the end. A long kick out from Currow’s Shane O’Leary was punched forward by Ian Somers. Centre forward Pa McCarthy collected and went on a 40 metre solo run unchallenged. As goal keeper David Kerins advanced to reduce McCarthys options, a deft and gentle lob by McCarthy saw the ball rest in the Scartaglen/Cordal goal. Padraig O’Shea added a point for Currow and a strong run at the defence won Pa McCarthy a free from 20 metres which he converted. The score was now 1-6 to 0-0 after twenty minutes. Wing back Denis Mahony replied for the home side and a Mike McCarthy free brought the first half to a close on a score of Currow 1-7 S Scartaglen/Cordal 0-1.
As matters transpired in the second half, Currow needed that half time lead as the second half belonged to Scartaglen /Cordal. Philip O’Connor sent a long range free sailing over the bar for the home sides second of the game. O’Connor slipped the ball to Pat Sullivan for point number three. Pa Naughten added a fourth and a Philip O’Connor free from 40 metres brought the score to 1-7 to 0-5 in favour of Currow. Pa McCarthy increased the Currow score to 1-8 after fifteen minutes. But Scartaglen/Cordal continued to pressurise the Currow men. Philip O’Connor and Pa McCarthy swapped points to leave the score 1-9 to 0-6 in favour of Currow with ten minutes remaining. The home side needed a goal if they were to bridge the gap but stout defending by the Currow backs prevented that. Two pointed frees from Philip O’Connor – one from over 50 metres – and a Pa Naughten point saw referee Mike Brosnan call proceedings to a halt. Currow had won on a score of 1-9 to Scartaglen/Cordals 0-9 – Pa McCarthy’s gaol after 15 minutes being the difference at the end.
Dermot Griffin East Kerry Board Chairman presented the Pa Doyle Memorial Cup to winning captain Pa McCarthy and thanked the competition sponsor Jimmy O’Brien Bar Killarney.

Junior League starts
The East Kerry Junior League sponsored by Patrick Doyle Haulage commenced last Tuesday evening with wins for Dr Crokes, Fossa and Firies. The league continues each Tuesday evening until mid May when the finalists will be known.
Firies had a 3 point victory over Gneeveguilla. A 22nd minute penalty by Aeneas O’Leary and a Tommy Gleeson goal five minutes later, saw Gneeveguilla a goal ahead at half time – 2-2 to 1-2. The Firies goal came from Eamon Foley after fifteen minutes. However, a more composed Firies outfit held the aces in the second half to finish 3 points clear despite missing a penalty five minutes from the end.
Meanwhile Dr Crokes had seven points to spare over Kilcummin.
Fossa 1-13 Rathmore 1-7
Fossa overcame a depleted Rathmore team in the first round of the East Kerry Junior League at Fossa on Tuesday evening last. Due to numerous absences, Rathmore fielded some stars of former days, notably, Matt Riordan and Patrick Desmond and if lady luck had smiled on Patrick he could well have had 2 goals to his credit. But it was the speedier Fossa men who dominated in most areas of the field leading at half time 1-6 to 0-3. The Fossa goal resulted from the quick thinking John Falvey picking out Gerard Curran behind the Rathmore defence with a fast free kick and Curran gave Sean Noonan no chance in the Rathmore goal. Damien Casey and Mark Nagle had two points early in the second half for Rathmore but Fossa replied with four. Full forward John McKenna swung over a peach of a point with his left foot from the endline. John Falvey – Fossa’s best forward – converted two frees before dribbling the ball along the ground past three defenders to set up Lawrence Kelly for a good score. Fossa now led 1-10 to 0-5 midway through the half. A well worked Rathmore move had Patrick Desmond pass to Damien Casey who got Mark Nagle free for a point. John McKenna replied for Fossa. Substitute Diarmuid O’Neill and John Falvey extended the Fossa lead to ten points with minutes remaining. But the stout hearted Damien Casey continued to urge on his comrades. He burst through the Fossa defence but was fouled in the square winning a penalty. Casey blasted a hand stinging ball towards Fossa keeper Eamon Sheehy’s right but Sheehy was agile enough to deflect the shot over the bar for a point. In the last attack of the game, Casey again ran hard at the Fossa defence, and breaking through, sent a pile driver from the edge of the square this time beating Sheehy in the Fossa goal. Referee Donal Casey called time with the final score reading Fossa 1-13 Rathmore 1-7.
